AWARDS

Most Outstanding COTA Mall Walking Group Winner - Karrinyup Shopping Centre

Karrinyup Mall Walking Group has had another excellent year with regular attendance of around 80 Walkers - with 21 Walkers awarded a Supreme Achievement Award for 10 years of attendance.

New Walkers are always greeted and applauded by the group at the outset of participation, and assigned a partner to help them on their first walk. In addition to the regular morning teas and coffee discounts from several cafes adding to the social cohesiveness of the group – Leaders and Walkers from the Centre are highly community minded.

They have continued their efforts collecting for a variety of local charities, which have included Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, Salvation Army Winter Coat appeal, Alzheimer’s Association and towards the cure of Motor Neuron Disease. With a strong range of Walk Leaders roam both levels of Karrinyup Shopping Centre and Walkers even participate in fashion parades to support one lucky retailer!

The Karrinyup Mall Walkers maintain their community links through local Probus clubs and are entirely inclusive, bringing in people of all ranges of ability, including those recovering from surgery and cognitive difficulties. Their atmosphere is collegiate, supportive and social – and this attitude of fun involvement makes the Karrinyup group one of the friendliest Seniors associations in Western Australia!

Most Outstanding COTA Mall Walking Leader - Maureen Banham

Maureen Banham remains the absolute model of organisational excellence in COTA Mall Walking.  As a passionate Mall Walker (supported by Walk Leader husband Ron), she remains the central personality for the Group that continues to grow throughout 2016. She attends without fail twice a week to lend her personal touch to the Group – ensuring in particular that all new Walkers are personally greeted and applauded for their decision to join. Her supremely attentive nature makes her aware of any difficulties experience by individuals – ensuring, for example, those needing additional attention are paired with more able-bodied walkers.

In 2016, Maureen has been instrumental in assisting the formation of the successful new Walking Group at The Square Mirrabooka – training and mentoring 4 new Walk Leaders and splitting her time between her home group and helping provide supervision for the new group on Wednesday mornings. This enormous loyalty to the aims and objectives of COTA Mall Walking was provided without suggestion or request – simply as collegiate support and a desire to see the benefits of Mall Walking extend further in the community.

For the 10th year anniversary of the Mall Walking Group, Maureen constructed an enormous photo wall of the history and achievements of the group for display during the event – and made efforts to document and ensure the recognition of Walkers dating from the initial year. She remains the epitome of grace under pressure and capable of dealing with any crisis, while always being both positive and professional in her support of all individuals in her Group.
