Earth Hour
Wednesday, March 19th, 2008KARRINYUP SUPPORTS EARTH HOUR
Karrinyup Shopping Centre will support Earth Hour on Saturday 29 March as part of an international effort to reduce global warming.
The centre is committed to reducing its energy use by turning off non essential lighting at the close of trade every day of the year and hopes that Earth Hour will encourage other businesses and individuals to follow its lead.
Those who participate in Earth Hour 2008 by turning off their lights for one hour at 7:30pm will help reduce energy consumption and show how simple it is to make a difference.
Earth Hour is an initiative of the conservation group WWF-Australia and was started in Sydney in 2007. The initiative resulted in 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses in Sydney turning off their lights for one hour, reducing the city's energy consumption by 10.2%.
In 2008 many cities across the globe including Bangkok, Chicago, Copenhagen, Dublin and Manila will join the initiative by turning off their lights for one hour in an effort to fight global warming.
Along with major cities and international icons, Earth Hour urges businesses and members of the public to turn off their lights and appliances in support of the event.
Karrinyup Centre Manager Steven Ihm said Karrinyupis proud to be working with the local community on an ongoing basis to take a positive step towards reducing the global greenhouse gas emissions.
“Karrinyup is the prime venue from which to assert a positive message about taking responsibility for our planet,” he said.
“We hope to set an example for our customers and retailers and inspire them to introduce some changes that will help support a more environmentally sustainable future.”
